Dental Implants at Dental Wellness of Albany
Dental implants are permanent replacements for missing teeth. They are posts made out of either metal or ceramic (zirconia) that are surgically implanted in the jaw to support crowns, bridges, and even full dentures.
The whole looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.
Through the first few months after the post has been implanted, the implant fuses with the bone around it to create an extremely secure and durable foundation. Once this osseointegration has happened, the dentist will top it with a crown that closely resembles the surrounding teeth.
Implants do more than just look good. They also help maintain the shape and dimension of the jaw after tooth loss. The pressure of biting and chewing stimulates the growth of new bone tissue – growth that stops when you lose a tooth. This, in turn, can change the shape of the jaw and give your face an aged, sunken-in look.
Advances in dental technology have made dental implants a better option than ever, with particular types to meet very specific needs. Patients can even get mini dental implants, which are narrower than standard, to replace teeth that don’t undergo much biting stress. They can also be used to stabilize lower dentures, making them more comfortable.
Having practiced dentistry for more than 30 years, Dr. Herzog is highly skilled and thus sought by many for the placement of either titanium or zirconia implants.
About the Dental Implant Procedure
There are a number of steps that take place in order to successfully place an implant, with the entire process taking an average of three to five months. Here are the main steps involved:
- Come in for an evaluation and consultation to see if you’re a good candidate for dental implants.
- Get a 3D cone beam x-ray of your jaw (CBCT) to determine the best location for the implant and the amount of any preparatory work needed prior to placement. Your dentist will use this image to design a surgical guide for your procedure.
- Have the implant surgically placed in your jaw.
- Allow time for a recovery period during which the implant can integrate with the jawbone – usually three to four months. You will be given a custom-made guard to protect the implant from the forces of chewing or grinding during this time.
- Have the crown placed on the osseointegrated implant.
